i suppose in the end it is whether or not the design fitted the brief - both the one written down and the unspoken one. it clearly did.
i personally don't think the second one is at all appropriate to the subject matter on the page shown. and i don't think it hangs together well. the first is much better. it is also more appropriate to a range of topics.
as a designer you've done your job well if you meet the brief and if the client is thrilled - whether or not you like what you've done. though I would find it very difficult to do something that I personally don't like. So you've done well on that score as well.

Can I... err... put a spanner in the works?
I like number 2.![]()
I don't know why, the colours are just better.
Then again, I'm a boy, what do I know about colours.![]()

I'm another spanner in the works.I much prefer #2. It's pretty & eye-catching. I find #1 a bit boring.
However, I do think that #2 it may not be appropriate for the subject matter. But I still find #1 boring - sorry!
lol, please feel free to put as many spanners in the works as you like - it makes me feel marginally better.

I agree that you should include both in your portfolio highlighting your original design and then the one the client preferred. That way it shows prospective clients how flexible you are as a designer and that you really do have their wishes at heart!!
I prefer no. 1....
In a way, what we 'like' is irrelevant to a certain extent. It is which one suits the brief and, possibly more importantly, which one is most appropriate to what the site's alla bout and what the person is trying to achieve.
I suspect she wanted something 'natural' and 'holistic' and 'gentle' or something like that - touchy-feely. WHich is why she prefers 2. Design 1 is more efficient and not at all touchy-feely, even though it has the home-made tabs and sticky papers. Possibly more masculine?

Oops, I prefer #2 too!
1. The flowers at the bottom of #1 seem out of place.
2. #1 Seems to be hanging in the air a bit. It needs something to bring it all together.
3. The additional flowers in #2 did the trick! I think it's lovely as a whole.
